Basement Jaxx

Basement Jaxx consist of 2 members, Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton. They started playing techno music in Brixton, South London in 1994 where they played regularly at night clubs. They released their first album called Remedy in 1999. Their hit song Red Alert featured on famous shows and commercials. Their other singles hit the highest on UK Singles Chart which is another accomplishment by this techno artist.

Their next album they released was named Rooty in 2001. There song name “Wheres Your Head At?” became internationally famous in 2002. This is one of their most famous singles and was featured in a movie sound track.

Their next album named Kish Kash was released in 2003. Many of their techno songs were featured on movies and tv themes. This album won them the Best Electronic Dance Album award at the 47th Grammy award ceremony.

Their 4th album was name Xrazy Itch Radio which was released in 2006. And in 2009 they released 2 albums name Scars and Zephyr. They also worked with many other famous artists, helping them with their beats and music. Since November of 2011, they been working on a new album and will most likely be released some time this year in 2012. It is just a matter of time before they release another great techno album of theirs.

DJ Splash

DJ Splash is one of the most popular and favorite techno artists in Hungary and around the world. He was born in 1968 and started making music at the age of 8 by first learning on a piano. He then took classes and later taught himself to learn jazz and other electronic music. At the age of 17, he threw his first party. Later on he became the DJ for the famous club Excalibur Club at the age of 22. Few years later he started playing for famous clubs and helped with club management at Rose Garden Club. He played techno music to clubs holding thousands of fans. In 1994, he received 2nd place at Budapest DMC which helped him even more for his reputation.

Later years he went on tours and created mixes around the world and became sponsored by large international franchises. By 1998, he became the host at Roxy Radio which is one of the most famous radio station in Budapest. He played for hours on the radio making him one of the most popular techno artists.

By 2001, Radio Deejay made him the leading DJ at their radio station. Tens of thousands tuned in to listen to him play his techno music every weekend night.

DJ Splash started at a young age, worked hard, and is still one of the most famous techno artist today.

Tiesto

Tiesto, otherwise known as Tijs Michiel Verwest, is a DJ, musician and producer of music found in the electronic dance and techno music genre. He has in the past used names like Forte Rio, Stray Dog, Wild Bunch and many more but is currently simply referred to as Tiesto which originated from the twisting of his childhood nickname.

Tiesto was born in Breda, Netherlands on January 17^th 1969. His love for music began as a twelve year old and progressed further when at the tender age of fourteen; he started to DJ as a professional at school parties. After constant encouragement from his manager and pal Wilfred, Tiesto became a resident DJ working for different clubs within Netherlands between the years 1985 and 1994 where he gained a reputation for playing a mix of Beat and Acid house music to improve his portfolio.

Tiesto began releasing tracks in 1994 under Nocular Records which is the period he came up with hardcore materials going by various aliases such as Da Joker and DJ Limited. This is the same period he got discovered by Basic Beats Recording which he later signed for and went on to release popular tracks. Between 1995 and 1996, he created and released four tracks on XTC and Bonzai Jumps.H He decided to join his pal Yves Vandichel at DJ Yves, which was the sub-label. Tiesto later made up his mind to leave Basic Beat and form Black Hole Recordings with pal Arny, who he moved with, and later released ‘Magik Series’, in the event creating large sub-labels ‘Songbird’ and ‘In Trance We Trust’.

In 1998 and 1999, Tiesto met and collaborated with to create song related to planetary consciousness and created Gouryella, which was a trance duo of himself and DJ Ferry Corsten. He later used the name Kamaya Painters during further collaborations with Benno de Goeij from 1998 to 2000. This is the same year he made larger strides through his main compilations ‘In Trance We Trust’ through the introduction of Johan Gielen, Ferry Corsten and Armin van Buuren. The rise continued with the introduction of his album Summerbreeze to the US audience in conjunction with a contract signed with Nettwerk.

From 2001 to now, Tiesto has gone on to release albums entitled ‘In My Memory’ between 2001 to 2004 which propelled him to even greater fame as the crowd numbers he performed for kept on increasing astronomically, ‘Just Be’ was released for 2004 to 2007 featuring the track ‘Traffic’ which debuted at number 1 in the Netherlands chart and creating a first by being the first non-vocal  track to achieve that feat. He was even invited to perform during the 2004 Athens Olympics which was a major feat.  ‘Perfect Remixes Vol. 3’ was released in 2005 consisting of 10 tracks, 2006 saw In Search of Sunrise 5: los Angeles and the 2007 to 2009 era saw ‘Elements of Life’ which was his third studio released album. Kaleidoscope is the 2009 album under new label Musical Freedom and the latest album was Kiss from the Past under the name Allure.

Tiesto, with his mind boggling achievements, is seen as a legend that will live forever through his promotion of trance and music throughout the world.

Daft Punk

This Is the duo of French musicians that sing techno music. The first is Guy-Manuel de Homem-christo who was born in 1974 Thomas Bangalter, born in 1975. As the group Daft Punk, major support was available to them during the late 90s as they innovatively blended synthpop and house music. The group has previously been complemented for coming up with songs considered to be vital in the French house music scene. The head of Ed Banger Records, Mr. Pedro Winter, was their manager between the years 1996 and 2008.

The two Frenchmen met in high school in 1987 within Paris. The two men quickly became friends, later even recording demos with other fellow students. This is what gave rise to the firm Darlin. The name Daft Punk arose when Darlin came up with hurriedly done work which had some errors and were consequently criticized in a negative review which claimed the music was ‘a bunch of daft Punk’. The collapse of Darlin gave the two members the opportunity to branch out on their own and use the negative review name as their stage name. The group then started to intensively experiment with synthesizers and drum machines.

The encouragement and motivation was derived from established names like The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys. The two were originally in a band known as Darlin which unfortunately or rather fortunately, led the two to strive alone to come up with a something of their own.  Once the group Daft Punk was formed, success came calling after they released their debut album known as Homework in 1997 which used a combination of house, techno, electro and acid house. Success did not halt there because in 2001 the release of the second album, Discovery, heralded a new dawn driven by particular songs that were major hits. The third installment album known as Human After All raised several review worries, in 2005.

The years 2006 and 2007 were spent by the group on tour; only releasing a live album by the name Alive was launched. It later won a Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album. The group always stands out and sets themselves separate from other bands due to the extensive and elaborate live events or shows that they participate in. A normal feature is seeing the visual factors which are blended by the type of music produced. Their emphasis on story and visual components related to the music production such as robot based costumes on the streets and on the stage.

In the year 2008, the daft punk group came up with other projects as they claimed they were working on new material. In 2009, the group won Grammy awards for the album Alive 2007 and the single entitled ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’ The Daft Punk group has even featured in video games. 2010 saw them accumulate more awards of Knighthoods. In 2011, their ranking on the DJ Magazine improved from position 44 to position 28. At the beginning of the year 2012, Daft Punk were ranked 2^nd on the Mixmag’s Greatest Dance Acts.

Fatboy Slim

Fatboy Slim, born as Norman Quentin Cook in England on the 23^rd of July 1963 is a techno dance music musician, DJ and record producer. The Fatboy Slim name came by much later after he had pioneered the rise in popularity of the Big Beat genre during the 90s. He was raised and educated in England at Reigate Grammar school.

In 1996, Quentin who had by now had a career since the early 80s adopted the use of the name Fatboy Slim and released an album in 1997 known as Better Living Through Chemistry which had a single that got to the top 40 UK hits. In 1998, he released another album named ‘You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby’ which went on to contribute a single ‘Praise You’ that became a number one solo hit on the UK charts. The video to the song won countless awards, the same song he sang at the 1999 MTV Video music Awards.

In the year 2000, Fatboy Slim released the fourth studio album named ‘Halfway between the Gutter and the Stars’. The video to one of the songs contained in this album called ‘Weapons of Choice’ won him 6 awards which was the most during that particular event. Fatboy Slim took some time out and reverted to using his real name where in 2003, he produced two tracks for the album by Blur known as Think Tank. 2004 saw Fatboy Slim make reentrance to the music scene after a whole 4 years when he returned with the album Palookaville.

His best work, however, was yet to arrive with the launch of his bestselling album ‘Why Try Harder’, released in 2006. It comprised 18 tracks out of which 10 made it to the top 40 best singles. His roles under the name Fatboy Slim reduced as he adopted his real name to work on other projects such as going to Cuba and doing remixes for celebrity music groups like A Tribe Called Quest and Beatle Boys. The collaborations with such music icons are very useful as it gives one the required exposure.

In 2008, Fatboy Slim changed his name to read ‘The Brighton Port Authority’ and launched another album which had songs with contributions or collaborations with Dizzee Rascal and David Byrne. Fatboy Slim has had the benefit of gracing the best music event scenes not only in England or Europe but also throughout the rest of the world, especially the United States of America.

Fatboy Slim has won accolades and awards such as two Brit Awards and ten MTV Video music Awards. He also had the privilege to perform at some of the biggest stages all over the world usually being the headliner. His last performance as Fatboy Slim is presumed to have been at the Rockness Festival which later proved to be untrue. Fatboy Slim is married with two kids by his wife, Zoe Ball. He has been affected by alcoholism which has seen him miss shows and seriously dent his message.

Paul Oakenfold

Paul Mark Oakenfold, popularly known as Electra, was born on 30 August 1963 in London, UK. His occupations include being a Techno Disk Jockey, record producer, remixer and funny enough chef.

The musical career of Paul started during the 1970s when he began playing soul music at a wine bar. While there, he bumped into Trevor Fung and Rumors in London during a concert he played in. His rise to fame began when he took a trip to Ibiza for the purpose of celebrating his birthday in 1987. He was accompanied by pals Ian Saint Paul, Trevor Fung, Nicky Holloway, Johnny Walker and Danny Rampling.  Oakenfold saw an opportunity to create a theme night named ‘Ibiza Reunion’ but was initially unsuccessful in convincing the venue owner to sanction the deal. However, when he tried again he was allowed to stage and since then, the event has been a permanent fixture on the calendar and rising to become one of the biggest acid house nights at Heaven club managed by Paul and Oakenfold.

The venue would later change its name to ‘Land of Oz’ because of financial issues that claimed the original venue. In 1988, Paul decided to start producing music using the name ‘Electra’ Perfecto Records was born from the idea that Paul wanted them to have a place to develop as new artists. During the early nineties, Paul worked on several different projects which saw him and his friend Osborne  have the opportunity to launch the album Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches. The album realized success and was listed as the number one album with pre-sale figures of over 150,000 copies . The album would later be named NMEs ‘1990 Album of the Year’, winning them both the overall award for the Best Producer.

Another achievement arrived in 1992 when after U2 released the song ‘Even Better than the Real Thing’, the Perfecto remix version peaked higher in the charts than the original song.  This led to U2 hiring Paul to provide support during their world tour which took place in 1993. Paul continued to grow his CV during the subsequent years as he came up with new content that made him a household name and in 1999, Oakenfold was named top in ‘DJmag’s Top 100 DJs’

The year 1999 also saw him make a move from England to the US where he decided to go on a tour. 2000 saw him create more tracks that continued to attract wide acclaim. 2000 to 2001 saw Paul Oakenfold create ‘Pioneer In America’ . He continued to collaborate with more artists and produce more tracks. During 2002 to 2004, Bunkka was born which he considered his first studio album under the new recording label he had joined, Maverick. 2005 to 2007 saw the emergence of ‘A Lively Mind, Greatest Hits and Side Work’.

Paul Oakenfold has continued to inspire new Techno enthusiasts through his mixes and led to the rise of the genre to major levels. He is considered as one of the fathers of Techno due to his extensive knowledge and involvement in the rise of Techno music.

History of Techno

Techno is basically a form of music known as electronic dance music that was first discovered in Michigan, United States of America around the mid-80s. The word techno was first used to describe a genre of music in the year 1988. However, currently, there is a wide variety of techno styles even though Detroit, Michigan is still seen as the source where most of the styles used now originated from.

The story goes that three friends in Detroit started merging different sounds consisting of mostly Italo-disco and Synthpop with funk which was a favorite of most. Derrick may, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson were still in High school during the eighties who frequented dance parties where the music type ranged and ended up listening to The Electrifying Mojo DJ who specialized in playing European sounds alongside B-52s and Prince. Techno was officially born in 1981 when Richard Davies and Atkins began releasing tracks under the name Cybotron.

It is around the same time that the still young hip-hop industry had a major say in the development of techno when thanks to DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa, electro was created, which was majorly made of synthesized beats computerized vocoder voices played a major part in the process.  In the year 1982, Afrika Bambaataa borrowed two melodies used in Kraftwerk’s songs ‘Numbers’ and ‘Trans-Europe Express’ to come up with an anthem known as ‘Planet Rock’. The influence of Electro took the music scene by storm. House music was what ruled the airwaves in states like New York and Chicago however. Most of the DJs that played it combined synthesized dance music and modified them through edits and mix tapes.

The emergence and eventual spread of techno was however propelled in a major way by the inexpensive technology used at the time that could be afforded by most people. A drum machine which was programmable, like the Roland TR-808, created the distinctive and unique sound known as techno or house music. This was escalated by the emergence of better machine versions starting with the Roland TB-303 which was easily accessible and from then on, the machines have constantly been improved with even better versions being created.

The emergence of techno took a major turn in the late eighties and early nineties when while it was not a popular choice in the United States, the European market took it up with open arms and it became a major hit with the majority of the population. What started as an underground project changed into successful music which completely changed the view of the world.

Artists such as Kraftwerk Giorgio Moroder and Yellow Magic Orchestra were the first to experiment with blending electronic music and African American music such as electro, funk, electric house and Chicago house music. There is a general selective use of the term Techno by journalists and fans alike and because of this the terms Trance and Tech House were derived even though they loosely define the term. The generation that grew up during the computers era are the biggest fans of techno.
